Proper nouns

Nouns that are really names of particular people, places or things are called proper nouns. Proper nouns and titles are always written with an initial capital letter.

They include:

The names of specific people
Anna Dickson
Mr John Merton
Uncle Liam

Geographical places

Spain
The Thames
Home Farm
Glen Road
Mount Fuji

Planets and galaxies

Jupiter
Earth
Milky Way

Days of the week, months and annual religious festivals (note that the seasons are not generally considered to be proper nouns)

Thursday
June
Easter

Patented goods and trade names

Hoover
Range Rover
Samsung

Newspaper, magazine and book titles (note that only major words in a title are capitalized, but not articles or prepositions etc)

The Times
Vogue
Lord of the Rings

Names of shops, theatres and other buildings

The Odeon
Nationwide
Marks & Spencer

Titles (the polite or professional labels that we give to people)
