Spanish word of the week: vivo

This week’s Spanish word of the week is vivo.

The literal meaning of vivo is living or alive:

todos los seres vivos all living beings

La ilusión lo mantiene vivo. Hope keeps him alive.

From this comes the metaphorical meaning of lively:

una discusión muy viva  a very lively discussion

One of its other extended meanings is bright. It often refers to colours or eyes:

telas de colores vivos brightly coloured fabrics

Sus ojos vivos parecieron iluminarse. Her bright eyes seemed to light up.
