This week we’re looking at the most common uses of another Spanish word pair: retrospectivo and retrospectiva.
Retrospectivo (together with its inflected forms retrospectiva, retrospectivos and retrospectivas) is an adjective. If you haven’t already spotted its likeness to a very similar Latinate word in English, a look at constituent parts spect and retro may tell you it has something to do with looking back. So something described as retrospectivo involves a look back in time. It means the same as retrospective:
una mirada retrospectiva sobre el pasado nacional
a retrospective look over the country’s past
La historia es retrospectiva.
History is retrospective.
Era un estudio retrospectivo basado en datos hospitalarios cuestionables.
It was a retrospective study based on questionable hospital data.
Estas acciones han sido descritas como crímenes de forma retrospectiva por algunos historiadores.
These acts have been retrospectively described as crimes by some historians.
But note the non-literal translation of escena retrospectiva in the following:
Comienza a recordar episodios de su vida, en una serie de escenas retrospectivas.
He begins to recall episodes of his life, in a series of flashbacks.
Una retrospectiva (feminine noun) and una exposición retrospectiva (adjectival use of retrospectivo) also look back at the past, but in this case they offer a chronological view of
an artist or group’s life work, allowing their development and evolution over time to be appreciated – a retrospective (exhibition):
Su gran retrospectiva se realizó en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes.
Her big retrospective took place at the National Gallery of Fine Arts.
una gran exposición retrospectiva sobre su vida y su obra
a big retrospective exhibition on her life and work
Retrospectiva is also used in the expression en retrospectiva, meaning in hindsight, in retrospect or looking back:
En retrospectiva, su importancia recae predominantemente en su trabajo temprano.
Looking back or In hindsight or In retrospect, his importance lies mainly in his early work.
