What’s the difference between ‘flour’ and ‘flower’?

Flour and flower are homophones in English and can sometimes be confused; they are both pronounced /flaʊər/ <add audio icon>  but have different spellings and their meanings are completely different.

flour

Flour is a white or brown powder that is made by grinding grain. It is used to make bread, cakes, and pastry.

Thicken the stew with a little flour dissolved in water.

flower

Flower can be a countable noun or a verb.

flower is the part of a plant which is often brightly coloured, grows at the end of a stem, and only survives for a short time. Flowers are often picked to give as a present or to put in a vase.

Each individual flower is tiny. 

She gave me a bunch of flowers. 

The flower garden will be ablaze with colour every day.

When a plant or tree flowers, its flowers appear and open.

Several of these rhododendrons will flower this year for the first time.
