What’s the difference between ‘knight’ and ‘night’?

Night and knight are homophones in English and are often confused; they are both pronounced /naɪt/ but have different spellings and their meanings are completely different.

night

Night is a noun.

The night is the part of each day when the sun has set and it is dark outside, especially the time when people are sleeping.

He didn’t sleep a wink all night.

The night is also the period of time between the end of the afternoon and the time that you go to bed, especially the time when you relax before going to bed.

So whose party was it last night?

knight

Knight is usually a countable noun.

In medieval times, a knight was a man of noble birth, who served his king or lord in battle.

Suddenly I realize how incredibly uncomfortable knights must have been in their armour.

A knight is also a piece used in the game of chess.

Black avoids the exchange and moves his knight to square b6.
