Here’s a ‘false friend’ whose meaning has very little connection with its English cousin: simpático. In English it means nice or friendly.

Estuvo muy simpática con todos. She was very nice to everybody.

La gente de la zona es muy simpática. The locals are very friendly.

Be careful not to use sympathetic as a translation. To say sympathetic in Spanish use the adjective comprensivo:

Es una persona comprensiva que sabe escuchar. She is a sympathetic listener.
