Spanish word of the week: alma

This week’s Spanish word of the week is  el alma.

The basic meaning of alma is your soul in a spiritual sense:

La cara es el espejo del alma. The face is the mirror of the soul.

una oración por su alma a prayer for his soul

Remember that alma is a feminine noun and so any adjectives have to agree with it.

The word alma comes into many phrases relating to how you feel:

Lo siento en el alma. I’m truly sorry.

su amigo del alma his bosom buddy

In some of them the word heart would be used in English:

Me dolió en el alma. It broke my heart.

Se lo agradezco con toda mi alma. I thank you will all my heart.

Al ver la casa, me le cayó el alma a los pies. When I saw the house my heart sank  (word for word my heart fell to my feet).
