Spanish word of the week: hogar

This week’s Spanish word of the week is hogar.

Hogar is a masculine noun that means home or household. You can listen to the pronunciation of hogar in the audio clip below:

You’ll already know that casa is a common word for home. There is another word which can also translate as home, hogar.  

Ana recordaba el hogar de su niñez. Ana remembered her childhood home.

un hogar feliz a happy home

Hogar can refer to where you live in a very physical sense:

productos para el hogar household products, products for the home

labores del hogar housework

But hogar is also used to talk about the people that live in a particular dwelling, the household:

el número de hogares que gastan más del 50% de sus ingresos en alquiler y comida the number of households spending more than 50% of their income on rent and food

In ads and formal documents you may see the phrase empleada del hogar, meaning home help.

Se busca empleada del hogar, preferible fija.  Habitación y baño independiente. Home help required, preferably permanent.  Separate room and bathroom provided.
