Spanish word of the week: juicio

This week’s Spanish word of the week is juicio.

Juicio is a masculine noun that means trial and also judgement, common sense or opinion. You can listen to the pronunciation of juicio in the audio clip below:

Juicio means a legal trial:

Se espera que el juicio dure varias semanas. The trial is expected to last (for) several weeks.

El juicio está en suspenso hasta que se encuentre un nuevo juez. The trial has been suspended until a new judge can be found.

Llevar a alguien a juicio means to take somebody to court.

Estoy dispuesto a ir a juicio si es necesario. I am quite prepared to go to court if necessary.

And juicio also means judgement in the sense of having common sense:

No me atrevería a poner en duda su buen juicio.  I wouldn’t presume to question her judgement.

tener poco juicio to lack common sense

It’s probably more often used in the phrase a mi juicio, a su juicio, in my opinion, in their opinion. This is a slightly formal way of introducing what you think:

A mi juicio no es su mejor película. In my opinion it’s not her best film.

A juicio del partido, había traicionado a sus compañeros. In the Party’s view, he’d betrayed his comrades.
