Spanish word of the week: seguir

This week’s Spanish word of the week is seguir.

Seguir is a verb that means to carry on, to go on. You can listen to the pronunciation of seguir in the audio clip below:

Seguir is a very common verb, meaning to carry on or to go on:

¿Quieres que sigamos con el ejercicio?  Shall we carry on with the exercise?

Si sigues así, te vas a poner enfermo.  If you go on like this, you’ll get sick.

It can also be used in a physical sense:

Siga por esta calle hasta llegar al Hotel Azul y luego tome la primera calle a la derecha.

Carry on till you get to the Hotel Azul and then take the first street on the right.

To convey the notion of ‘still doing something’, or to ‘go on doing something’, you can also use seguir + the gerund:

Sigo sintiendo lo mismo por ti. I still feel the same about you.

Siguen viviendo en Barcelona. They still live in Barcelona.
