Spanish word of the week: regular

This week’s Spanish word of the week is regular.

regular is an adverb that means so-so or not brilliantly . You can listen to the pronunciation of regular in the audio clip below:

Here’s a ‘false friend’ whose meaning has very little connection with its English cousin ‘regular’.

If you ask someone how they are in Spanish they may reply with the single word regular:

¿Cómo te encuentras? – Regular How are you? – So-so.

In this use, regular means ‘ok’ but not exceptional.

¿Qué te pareció la película? – Regular What did you think of the film? – So-so OR Nothing special.

Me fue regular en el examen. My exam didn’t go brilliantly.
